HITCHLAB. FL50 floor lamp — Oskar de Roover
OCTOBER 2024
Pictures by Felix Waldner & Oskar de Roover.
The FL50 floor lamp is made by interior architect & designer Oskar De Roover. The lamps start from salvaged pieces of natural stone, used in a previous life as window sills or in danger of ending up in a dumpster somewhere. Based on our tools, a support structure was designed in stainless steel, into which the stones are clamped. This structure also carries a tube light, which illuminates both the stones and the space around them. FL50 was on view at the Dutch Design Week 2024 in Eindhoven and at For The Now in Brussels.
The stones thus become more than they were before. They do not lie in mortar or hang glued to a support, but stand proudly upright and carry the structure that sheds light on their natural beauty. They are given a new place, but they can also go on: with nothing more than a screwdriver, the pieces can be detached again, without any damage to the stone. The steel structure that makes this possible is deliberately left rough. With visible traces of the laser machining it underwent, it retreats into the background and is obedient to what it clamps down. What was in danger of becoming waste regains a dignified place. From a deep respect for the material, a new story emerges.
